Transportation Alternatives Analysis
for the
Dane County / Greater Madison
Metropolitan Area

Phase 1 Alternative

Hybrid Commuter / Street-Running Rail
Some of the characteristics of the two previous rail alternatives are combined
in the Hybrid Alternative.  Four existing rail routes are
connected into the
system of West, North, Northeast, and Southeast rail lines.  They all are
interconnected in downtown Madison
allowing trains from one line to
interconnect with each of the other lines.  The main difference between this
and the railroad rights-of-way alternative is that the downtown Madison rail
service is located on City street rights-of-way, closer to the centers of jobs
and entertainment.  In addition, some of the lines are shorter in length,
focusing service a bit more in the denser portions of the urban area.
Additional direct rail service routes are proposed, in order to estimate
whether or not increased ridership levels are possible.
